What We've Learned

At IRIS, we believe that learning from lived experiences and research is the foundation of meaningful change. This section highlights the insights we’ve gained from families, system patterns, and our own journey. By sharing these lessons, we aim to deepen understanding and drive progress in supporting families of children with complex needs.

Why Learning Matters

Learning from lived experiences and research is essential because:

  • It centres the voices of families, ensuring their needs and challenges are heard and addressed.

  • It informs evidence-based practices, allowing us to develop solutions that truly work.

  • It drives systemic change, helping us advocate for policies and services that make a real difference.

Through our engagement with families, we’ve identified common themes and patterns:

  • Navigation Challenges: Families often struggle to navigate complex systems, leading to frustration and unmet needs.

  • Isolation and Burnout: Parents and siblings frequently experience isolation, mental health challenges, and burnout due to lack of support.

  • Gaps in Services: Many families report that services are fragmented, with critical gaps in education, health, and social care.

  • Empowerment Through Knowledge: Families thrive when they have access to clear information, peer support, and advocacy tools.

Our work has revealed recurring issues and gaps in the current system:

  • Silos Between Services: Education, health, and social care often operate in isolation, leaving families to bridge the gaps.

  • Crisis-Driven Responses: Support is frequently reactive rather than proactive, leading to preventable crises.

  • Lack of Family-Centred Approaches: Services often focus on the child’s needs without considering the well-being of the entire family.

  • Limited Access to Resources: Families face barriers in accessing information, financial support, and community resources.

We are dedicated to:

  • Expanding our research to fill gaps in knowledge and inform best practices.

  • Amplifying family voices in policy discussions and service design.

  • Collaborating with partners to create systemic change that benefits all families.

By learning together, we can build a future where every family receives the support they need to thrive.
